Cocktails and dreams: Rosé all day

Sounding more like an itinerary than a love song, "Kokomo" was a #1 hit by The Beach Boys in 1998 (after a very long time from having any success on the music charts). Its lyrics describe two lovers taking a trip to a relaxing place on Kokomo, a fictional island off the Florida Keys. The song also mentions many island locales: Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahama(s), Key Largo, Montego (Bay), Martinique, Montserrat, and Port-au-Prince.

The track was a #1 hit with the soundtrack of the movie Cocktail, 1998, with Tom Cruise. The fictional bar that Cruise’s character opens is called Cocktails and Dreams; there is such a bar in The Bahamas. If you know nothing else about the movie or song, you likely know the first 6 islands in the lyrics, and that Kokomo is on your virtual cruising itinerary only!

While colorful cocktails and fanciful dreams may be your Caribbean drink of choice, nothing says long luxurious lunches and sultry suntans more than the classic rosé. What could possibly be as emotive as a glass of perfectly chilled rosé on your Sweet Escape charter in The Bahamas? Typically, with some exceptions, Rosé is best drunk as young so get it chilled and opened as soon as possible! With 2 wine coolers and a wine wall of over 260 bottles onboard Sweet Escape, that’s no problem. Provence rosés, are some of the most versatile wines around. They have enough character not to be overwhelmed by most foods and the acidity to cut through the flavours and in particular salt.

National Rosé Day in 2019 Saturday, June 8, 2019.

A rosé is a type of wine that incorporates some of the color from the grape skins, but not enough to qualify it as a red wine. The rosé enthusiast has been conditioned to believe a pale pink is the pinnacle of sophistication, more vibrant strawberry pink hues can be just as good if not better. Some of the very light versions can be more style over substance with more effort gone into creating a barely there shade with little regard to the aroma and taste.  So Yacht Sweet Escape has put together a few of our favorites and your favorites, for your perusal. While most of these are available on charter, Grace will gladly provision for your requests.

The obvious first rosé on everyones list is of course, would be Whispering Angel. Widely considered one of the best rosés on the market, this bottle from Provence is a very inviting shade of pink with an aromatic nose on opening. Macerated strawberries mingle with delicate notes of peach, rose-water and orange blossom. Crisp, dry and refreshing, this is extremely well balanced with a smooth as silk finish. Suitable for any time on yacht charter but lately we have been indulging in Rock Angel.

Chateau d’Esclans Rock Angel

“How does a rosé elude boundaries between being a superb aperitif rosé and a fine wine that enjoys the versatility of being successfully paired with a broad range of fine cuisine? Château d’esclans Rock Angel… the highly eligible wine, if you serve it they will come.”—Chateau d’Esclans

This wine has delicate red berry aromas with mineral notes. There is a touch of floral and spice notes that are present in addition to oak that adds a creamy feel and texture. It's rich and racy on the palate with firm acidity and a long, silky finish. The label is sexy and Rock N’ Roll, the magnum is a show-stopper!

Chateau Miraval Cotes de Provence Rose

There is the “A” list celebrity of Chateau Miraval Cotes de Provence Rose. Extremely popular with the Hampton and Henley sets, it has made a real name for itself regardless of the celebrity owners looming divorce. The Miraval bottle, (reminiscent of cognac) – is instantly recognisable. Only negative is the shape of the bottle makes it a bit difficult to stow; on a positive note, it’s that good that it doesn’t hang around long enough needing to be stowed!

Miraval is one of the hottest dry Rosé wines on the market and is made by the talented, quality-driven Marc Perrin. The Perrin family owns the illustrious Beaucastel estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and is considered one of the greatest wine estates in the world. Perrin converted the ancient Miraval vineyard to organic farming when he was hired by the Pitt-Jolie family. The locations of the vineyard parcels where the grapes are grown are nearly 350 meters above sea level, resulting in a big swing in temperature between day and night during the growing season – usually good for quality.

WINE ENTHUSIAST

Wine Enthusiast -Cotes de Provence, France - "Still owned jointly by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, this beautiful estate has produced a rich, full wine.....this wine exhibits great sophistication, with rich caramel and strawberry fruit and spice. Drink now..."

Pretty pale color, petal pink, elegant with shiny reflections. This rosé presents a very beautiful and intense aromatic expression of fresh fruit and spring flowers. In the mouth, the acidity is refreshing; a great elegance and a nice balance dominate, with a saline finish.

Domaines Ott*

Miraval’s marketing may have taken heed to the likes of what could be considered as the epitome of the south French rosé, Domaine Ott*. The winery’s iconic bottle can be spotted at a considerable distance. Marcel Ott, founder of Domaines Ott* – the owners of the spectacularly-located seafront vineyard, called Clos Mireille – is considered to be the pioneer behind modern rosé. “What proud and skilled vintner has never dreamed of providing their wine with the sanctum of an exclusive, unique and instantly recognisable bottle? In 1930, René Ott did exactly that. He, who never stopped loving Provence, its hills and shorelines punctuated by Cypresses and uninterrupted rows of vines, created a bottle with slender curves inspired by the grace of the landscape.”—Domaines Ott*

Today, it is still the signature of Domaines Ott* and it evokes the memory of an elegant amphora that kept the wine cool many centuries ago. There are 3 famous rosé’s from the winery with Château de Selle as a regular onboard Yacht Sweet Escape for many reasons. On the palate, the immediate effect is lively and bright, revealing notes of pink grapefruit, fleshy fruit and, once the wine has had a chance to breathe, hints of fruit tart. The finish is complex and lasting.

  • Clos Mireille: “That’s the vineyard nearest the sea. You taste the fresh, fruity, light flavours of young vines.”

  • Château de Selle: “That was the original one. It’s subtle, bigger. It’s the rosé that goes with food.”

  • Château Romassan: darker in tone due to its Mourvèdre grapes, “It needs oxygen, so you should open it at least two hours before you drink it.”

    Chateau Minuty Rose Et Or

Finally we have reached the sensational Chateau Minuty Rose Et Or. Château Minuty was founded by the Matton-Farnet family, who has been in the wine industry for three centuries. The winery is now run by Jean-Etienne and François Matton who continue to improve the brand and give it an international direction. The two have replaced the Carignan and Ugni Blanc grapes with Grenache and Rolle, which produce beautiful rosés.

This is Château Minuty's top rosé. Rose et Or is a delicate, subtle wine made from old vines with exceptional care. A pale rosé with great subtelty, finesse, balance and freshness. Sharp notes of citrus fruit and white flowers. Complex on the palate with an exceptional freshness and finesse offering notes of pink grapefruit and white peach. Delicious on its own or with lighter dishes, and perfect for being served anytime on your luxury yacht charter.
